Field notes

Buy 10% over for a straight grid and 15% for diagonal or herringbone — the angled cuts at the perimeter are pure waste, and you want a few spares from the same lot for future repairs. Dry-lay a row before you spread thinset to find your layout and avoid a sliver-width cut against the most visible wall. Order all your tile in one lot; shade varies between production runs.

How the tile calculator works

The math behind the tool:

tiles = area ÷ tile area × (1 + waste%)

Frequently asked questions

How many tiles do I need?

Divide the area to be tiled by the coverage of one tile, then add 10% for cuts and breakage. A 120 ft² floor with 1 ft² tiles needs about 132 tiles.

How much extra tile should I buy?

Add 10% waste for a straight grid layout and 15% for diagonal or herringbone patterns, plus keep a few spares for future repairs.

How do you calculate square feet for tile?

Multiply length by width in feet for floors, or wall run by height for walls. Add 10% for cuts, or 15% for a diagonal or offset pattern. Buy the overage in the same production run — tile colour shifts between batches, and a mid-job replacement will not match.
